some, however, listened with air of attention to earnest request for circumstantial details of case, but referred me to folio volume, in were entered all the charges, of nature, involving any serious tendency--in fact, all that a --in the regular chronological succession according to they came before the magistrate. here, in vast calendar of and misery, amidst the _aliases_ or designations of , prostitutes, felons, stood the description, at length, christian and surnames all properly registered, of agnes--of her whose very name had always sounded to ears like very echo of innocence, purity, and pastoral simplicity. here in column stood the name and residence of accuser. i shall call him _barratt_, for was amongst his names, and a by he had at period of infamous life been known to public, though not his principal name, or the one which he had thought fit to at era. james barratt, then, as shall here call him, was a --keeping a large and conspicuous shop in crowded and what was then considered a part of city. did i live to it? it accused agnes m---- of on morning secreted in muff, and feloniously carried away, a piece of lace, the property of barratt. and the result of the first examination was thus communicated in column, written in ink--'remanded to second day after to-morrow for final examination.
